| About Us |
| Development Alternatives with Women for a New Era (DAWN) is a network of feminist scholars, researchers and activists from the economic South working for economic and gender justice and sustainable and democratic development. DAWN provides a forum for feminist research, analyses and advocacy on global issues (economic, social and political) affecting the livelihoods, living standards, rights and development prospects of women, especially poor and marginalized women, in regions of the South. Through research, analyses, advocacy and, more recently, training, DAWN seeks to support women's mobilization within civil society to challenge inequitable social, economic and political relations at global, regional and national levels, and to advance feminist alternatives. |

Gigi Francisco's Intervention at the World Education Forum (Capitalist Crisis, Causes, Impact & Consequences for the World of Education)
We must listen to our sisters & brothers from indigenous people’s movements & communities that are in the forefront of struggles over the defense of natural resource bases & the well-being of the natural world that has supported life on our planet. In addition to gender & economic justice, we should all be working on ecological justice as well. Now is the time to promote a more comprehensive & inter-related view of justice because w/ the uncertainties & unpredictability of our environment, we are less certain of the time we still have on this planet to do so.

Cook Islands Women’s NGO at the Pacific Islands Forum
At the 2011 Pacific Islands Forum in Auckland New Zealand, the Cook Islands Government may be the only delegation with official NGO representation. Kairangi Samuela of Punanga Tauturu Inc (also a DAWN Regional Training Institute alumna) has been accredited to the Government delegation as an indication of the Government recognition of civil society and NGO partnerships in economic and social development. It is even more significant that it is a women’s NGO representative. Punanga Tauturu Inc (Cook Islands Women’s Counsellng Centre) is a Women and Children focused NGO whose objectives include creating a positive legal framework that recognizes the rights of women and children in accessing Justice.

DAWN Welcomes Historic Report on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity
DAWN celebrates the release of the very first UN report on human rights, sexual orientation and gender identity. The report documents widespread discrimination and violence faced by LGBTI people worldwide, and calls on States to apply the international legal framework to end these human rights violations. The mandate for the report came from the UN HRC, after South Africa took leadership on the issue by coordinating a resolution at the world human rights body in June.
